This Senior Design Project focuses on combining two different geology projects: A Stream Table and a an AR Sand Table. This Combination is the first of its kind
Stream Table Example
AR Sand Table Example
The School of Geology and Geological Engineering in the College of Engineering and Mines at the University of North Dakota teaches a wide range of geology, environmental science, and geological engineering courses and does a lot of community outreach events. This senior design project will result in equipment that will be used in classroom teaching, online teaching, and community outreach, so we are very excited about it.
The idea behind the project is to use the “cool factor” of augmented reality to grab attention, but to also use the augmented reality as a teaching tool since so many people are visual learners. Some other universities already have augmented reality sand tables, which are much more static, but we are at UND and we want to step up and exceed what other universities are doing by taking the idea of an augmented reality stream table to the next level, with an augmented reality stream table. This will show that CEM is on the cutting edge in yet another field – educational AR in the geosciences.
Carter is a Project Manager for this project. His leadership responsibilities include:
Facilitating Meetings
Organizing Scrum Board
Generating Project Charter and Schedule
Communicating with all Group Members
Contacting Vendors and other Third Parties
Kept information organized and automated through Loop
Mechanical Components:
Rotation from 0 - 22 degrees
Actuator Design
Pump and Flow Design for Recyclable Water Flow
Steel Tube Framing
Collapsable Projector & Kinect Sensor Mounts
Sheet Metal Tabletop Design
Final Manufacturing Details to come! Will Include:
Specific BOMs
Detailed Drawings
Process Planning
Ordering
Welding
Laser / Plasma Cutting
Bearing Tapping
Assembly
First Semester focused on testing for size and function of the table
Created Wooden Prototype
Still Able to Rotate 22 Degrees
Adjustable Height to Check for Ideal Final Design Location
Kinect has a custom mount that allows it to reverse the tilt
This allows for testing for static mounting if desired
Mobile With the same Casters as Final Design
More Results and info to come!
